Hello,

Welcome to Headwaters and Highcountry Outfitters, and thank you for your interest.  We are located in Musselshell, Montana, in the eastern-central part of the state.  It is an area along the Musselshell River in a small mountain range called the Bull Mountains.  Our area is very "gamey" with rocky mountain elk, whitetail and mule deer, north american pronghorn, merriams turkeys, upland game birds, including sharptailed grouse, sage grouse, hungarian partridge, pheasants, waterfowl, coyotes and prairie dogs.

We are proud to offer you some of the best hunts that Montana has to offer. You will be hunting on private cattle ranches that are leased exclusively to us for our hunts.

                                        Elk (Archery)

Here at Headwaters and Highcountry Outfitters we really get into our archery hunts. We are all avid bowhunters and we have some very respectable animals to our credit. All of the elk on this web site have been taken with a bow. We hunt elk during the rut, with the bugle, spot and stalk, decoys and stands.  There are some great genetics in our elk here. Every year a couple of four hundred-plus bulls come out of these hills. Maybe that's why they call our area the Bull Mountains. Most of our bulls make the Pope and Young minimum, and we have  taken several bulls that exceed three-fifty.  Come try these big critters with a bow, our success with archery is very good.  Our archery season is during the rut, the best time to hunt for a trophy bull.  These animals live in our area, and being resident elk, snow, weather, and migrations do not effect them.   It doesn't get any better...

There are a very limited amount of rifle tags for this area and if you do happen to draw one please do give us a call.  We will do the hunt and your odds are not bad for a three fifty or bigger bull.

Deer (Rifle and Archery)

We do more deer hunts than any other animal and we do very well with them.  We are almost 100% for success on deer with a gun or bow.  We offer whitetail as well as mule deer for both rifle and archery.  You will be hunting from tree stands or ground blinds for the whitetails.  Mule deer are generally hunted using the tried and true “spot and stalk” method.  We have impressive bucks, whitetails or mulies, the choice is yours.  If you are disciplined enough to pass on the smaller deer, you should be into some real "shooters" before long.  We have a few that break that magical 30" plus mark.

Antelope (Rifle and Archery)

If you've never been west before, an antelope hunt is a great place to start.  It is a reasonably priced three-day hunt, rifle or bow. For our bow hunting, we use blinds, waterholes and decoys and have taken many Pope and Young bucks .  For rifle, we use the "spot and stalk" routine and have taken a few awesome Boone and Crockett bucks.  Rifle and archery tags are purchased through a lottery with close to 100% success in previous years.  Our antelope herds are plentiful and our success rate is high.
