Hello,

Welcome to Headwaters and Highcountry Outfitters and thank you for your interest in our camp.  We are located in Musselshell, Montana, in the eastern-central part of the state.  It is an area along the Musselshell River in a small mountain range called the Bull Mountains.  This area is very "gamey" with rocky mountain elk, whitetail and mule deer, north american pronghorn, merriams turkeys, upland game birds, including sharptailed grouse, sage grouse, hungarian partridge, pheasants, waterfowl, coyotes and prairie dogs.

We are proud to offer you some of the best hunts that Montana has to offer. You will be hunting on private cattle ranches that are leased exclusively to us for our hunts to ensure you will not be in competition with other hunters. The country is basically made up of river bottoms that are cultivated farm land that runs uphill into sandstone rimrocks and timbered draws and canyons.

                                        Elk (Archery)

Guaranteed Tags!!!  How’s that to start out talking about elk hunting.

Here at H&H Outfitters we really get into our archery hunts. We are all avid bowhunters and we have some very respectable animals to our credit. All of the elk on this web site have been taken with a bow. We hunt elk during the rut, with the bugle, spot and stalk, decoys and stands. The ranches we lease have stock tanks to water the cattle. The elk come out of hills to drink from these tanks. We have our stands located in these active areas. There are some great genetics in our elk here. Every year a couple four hundred plus bulls come out of these hills. Maybe that's why they call these the Bull Mountains. Most of our bulls make the Pope and Young minimum, and we have a couple that exceed three-fifty. One was three-fiftyfive and one was three-sixtysix. Come try these big critters with a bow.  Our success with archery is really very good.  We have odds that not many can match.  We have about an eighty percent shot opportunity for twenty five yards or less with about a forty to fifty percent harvest.  The archery season is on during the rut so hang on to that hat.  Also the elk in our area live here.  They are resident elk so snow, weather, and migrations do not effect them here.   It doesn't get any better.

There are a very limited amount of rifle tags for this area and if you do happen to draw one please do give us a call.  We will do the hunt and your odds are not bad for a three fifty or bigger bull.

Deer (Rifle and Archery)

The tags for deer, either rifle or bow, are guaranteed.  We do more deer hunts than any other animal and we do very well with them.  We are almost 100% for success on deer with a gun or bow.  We offer whitetail as well as mule deer for both rifle and archery.  Our leases are along the river bottom which is ideal whitetail habitat.   The land  then transitions up into the “breaks” that provide access for the mule deer.  You will be hunting from tree stands or ground blinds for the whitetails. Mule deer are generally hunted using the tried and true “spot and stalk” method.  We have impressive bucks, whitetails or mulies, the choice is yours.  You will see a good number of 125 to 130 inch whitetails, and some will do much better.  You will also see mulies in the  24 to 25 inch width with four points to a side  which you should consider a minimum.  Your guide looks at a lot of these bucks each season, he will help you to make the right choice.  If you look at a buck and your guide says "holy ----" please, just shoot.  Don't wait to ask!!  If you are disciplined enough to pass on the smaller deer, you should be into some real "shooters" before long.  We have a few that break that magical 30" plus mark.

                           Antelope (Rifle and Archery)

If you like the stalk and you like to shoot long range, these are the dudes.  If you've never been west before, cut your teeth on the antelope.  It won't break the bank either.  Rifle or bow, they are fun.  Bow hunting, we use blinds, waterholes and decoys.  Rifle, we do the old "spot and stalk" routine.  Tags for archery antelope are guaranteed.  Rifle is a draw with about an 80% success rate.  Montana has very good antelope bucks and our areas are no exception.  We have taken some bucks in the 80+ class and they were only 15” long.  Our antelope have very good mass in this area which makes big numbers fast for you.

What else is there to do when you fill your tag early?  You can try popping a couple of prairie dogs or how about a bigger dog, like a coyote?  There's a lot to do and your guide is yours for the whole hunt, not just until you fill your tag.  If you are interested in shooting a merriams turkey, you can get an over-the-counter tag when you get here. There are pheasants, waterfowl, and upland gamebirds.  Bring your favorite scatter gun and enjoy.

Our rifle and archery hunts are all inclusive. You buy your state license, bring your personal gear and favorite "shooter" and everything else is provided. You will stay in our full-service lodge with three guest rooms, a bar and game room, lounge area, dining room, commercial kitchen, double bath, laundry facility, and outside hot tub.   You will recieve three generous meals a day, plus snacks and drinks (we do not provide alcohol).   While you are hunting, lunch will be taken with you to the field.  Don't plan on losing any weight while you are in our camp, our cook will see to that!  The lodge is very comfortable and will provide you with an atmosphere where you can eat, rest and relax.

Montana is one of the few states that offers outfitter sponsored guaranteed tags.  The deadline for these tags is March 15, so plan your hunt with us and let us get you started on your paperwork now.
